There is also the idea of DM being the underdog - two against one is a little unfair!
By the way - in the third movie the bad guy has to win - because the Republic falls and the Evil Empire wins! - This could become a good commentary about how people will accept evil because either 1) they do not realize it, or 2) they are trying to stave off a perceived "greater" evil.
