LOL!!!!!!!! Oh my goodness, that's a good one. I knew it was you Alex all along, since you and I are big into Napster, plus Alex has his sig.
Anyway, about the Napster thing, I had read about some of it at work while I was Online. It's probably not going to last, but it's a good thing I got all the songs I ever wanted already, so it's not really going to hurt me that much. There are already file shearing programs out there where you can search for you songs, they aren't as well known or as good as Napster.
The other programs can be found at their websites.
www.spinfrenzy.com
www.imesh.com
There was one other but the site doesn't seem to work anymore.
When you do searches with these other programs the results aren't always that good, but I have a feeling that all will change when Napster gets the boot. I got one song on Imesh a few weeks ago when I couldn't find it anywhere on Napster, so maybe these other networks are growing.
I agree with all of your thoughts about downloading from Napster. If you go and download full albums I can see how that can hurt the money income for the artists. Now, I have two full albums downloaded, but I plan on buying the CD. Actually, I plan on buying the CDs for most if not all of the songs I had downloaded, eventually. Why? Because I want to get the actual CD sound, now with some MP3s you can get the full CD sound, but those are very scarce. One of the full albums that I have is a Roy Orbison Album, now he's dead so I'm not actually hurting the artist if he's dead. But still, I will still buy the Album because I want the actual CD in the original CD quality.
Downloading one or two songs from an album like a single I don't see as hurting either. Why? Because we get those same popular songs off the radio for free and with the same sound quality. There is no law saying you cannot record songs off the radio, I don't see downloading MP3s any different unless you are downloading full albums.
Also, I see this as a great way to have the song when you want it until you go and buy the CD. My collection will hold me over until I actually get the CDs someday. It was also very good in helping me find out who some of these artists are and what the names of certain songs that I was wondering about were called. I was able to track down some songs I haven't heard in 13 or so years until I found them on Napster and downloaded them, I had no idea who sang some of them or what the name of the songs were. They don't play most of the songs I was trying to track down on the radio anymore, I was able to search for the songs by using some lyrics and download some of the results. It was amazing that I found just about every song I had ever wanted to have and track down. Now since I know the artists and names of those songs I can look for the CDs, which I really want to do.
So, Napster has been very beneficial to me in many ways. It's going to be hard to let them go, but we should still be able to do some MP3 searches with those other programs. I'm just glad I got all the things I needed from Napster while I did.
