I think you all bring up some interesting points. However, I do not think that either LER or MM has read my reply to Alex earlier - because neither one of you deal with what I said.
Is it OK to lie if you are saving someone else's life? I don't think so.
The Bible says, "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another" Eph 4:25
also, "Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight" Prov. 12:22.
The examples that have been given about "saving someone's life" are not guaranteed are they? The person(s) whom you lie to may not believe your lie? Must they? They might see through your lie very easily (especially if you are one who is not "experienced" in lying).
You make the supposition that you are willing to die for your beliefs - what about your Jewish friends? You are denying them something which you claim is a virtue (not allowing them to die for their beliefs if they so choose). I think there is some kind of false heroism involved here.
There is also the possibility of interposing your own human works (by lying) rather than trusting upon the grace and mercy of God. It is God who is the one that ultimately protects each and every one of us. When we put our trust in God and tell the truth to everyman, then we can be assured that "The truth shall set us free". What assurances do we have that a lie would be so honoured by God? - Especially if God has plainly declared his hatred for lies?
As I said before - one does not have to answer every single question put to him/her. A simple answer of "I will not tell you" is far more reasonable than a lie that may or may not be believed?
I would like to hear your thoughts on this matter.
Your bro in Jesus,
-Rob
