Well, I'm no Shane, but I think I can be of some help to you.
Shane will tell you to go to www.netzero.com... however, I've found out of a better free service, I have not tried it myself, but from people I've spoken to, it's gotten some high regard. Anyway, the address is Http://www.freeinet.com. Your friend can use this if he has a Mac OR an IBM-compatable... it works with both.
For you and your friend to keep in contact, and be able to talk, have your friend go to http://www.aol.com, and download an "Instant Messenger". He can use one of his AOL names, or create a new name for the program. There too is both a Mac and PC version of this program.
